Angela is finishing up getting ready.
The buttons were all fastened on her dress as she puts her suede red shoes on. Gautham’s mom, Angela’s mother in law to-be wipes the dried henna off her left hand, as her own mother cleans her right. Her necklace was left at home, and her sister is on the phone directing someone to go grab it before the ceremony. For the time being, she wears her sisters pearls.
We walk down and cross the busy downtown Austin street. Gautham is waiting, his back turned. Angela’s father and future father-in-law look on. She waits by them a moment to gather herself, fixing her father’s jacket. She taps Gautham’s shoulder and covers his eyes as he turns around. They smile at one another and take in the sight of their future spouse. She fixes his bowtie and he admires her curls, pushing her hair from her shoulders. After a long embrace, a kiss on the forehead, and a moment of quiet prayer, they turn back around to us, ready for their photos. Gautham’s mom, who followed us down, then presents Gautham with a brown leather box. Angela, not really sure what’s happening, looks down at the box as he opens it up to her. Her eyes light up once she realizes what’s inside. Pure sparkles. Her eyes tear up as Gautham takes off her sister’s pearls and replaces it with a beautiful necklace and earring set interlaced with diamonds and emeralds. Her mother-in-law comes over, and replaces the earrings for her.
Later at the reception,
Angela’s sister Michelle stood in front of them and looked back on the first time she met Angela. It was eleven years ago, she recalls that they met – of all places – at the airport. All her belongings were in her backpack, and all she remembers was the huge smile on Angela’s face as she arrived with her new family. Later down the road, when Angela met Gautham, Michelle said she knew he was definitely the one. Angela’s smile was even wider than before. And that smile still beamed on her face today, the day they became husband and wife.
