On the first year, fifth year, twenty fifth, and fiftieth.
Joseph, their officiant, looked over the crowd as he stood in front of Kelly and Ryan. Between them was a small leather box, holding a bottle of wine. This box was the centerpiece of their beautiful, outdoor ceremony at the Briscoe Western Art Museum. Inside, there was a bottle of wine called Bella Radici. Kelly picked it because in Italian it means “beautiful roots.” As Joseph spoke to the crowd, they placed their handwritten letters inside and looked up at each other. On the day marking their first year of marriage, they’ll open that box up again, read the letters they wrote on their wedding day, and share this bottle of wine. And then they’ll add a new bottle, with new letters, that will wait for their fifth year of marriage together. So on and so on. They will continue their new tradition until the box becomes an heirloom imbibed with the roots of their love. Joseph also encouraged each wedding guest, when visiting their home, to touch the box on display and say to them “I was there!”

As Kelly and Ryan held each others hands in front of the people they love, they were reminded that through the storms that they will weather, their friendship is the core of their love. Kelly had told him before their big day that her favorite thing about Ryan was his ability to keep her calm when she gets stressed. He would hug her, resting his chin on her head, and she knew everything would be alright. Just before they sealed it all with a kiss, Ryan hugged her close, rested his chin on her head, and held her for a moment. Their last calming moment as fiances, and then they sealed their marriage with a kiss and their new season of life began, with a celebration with all their friends and loved ones!
